Samurai Raising his Sword

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Ichikawa Danjuro as an angry samurai raising his sword high above his head, gripping the weapon with both hands. The beauty attempts to defend herself against the attack with a koto, tossing the instrument up to block the pending blow. The verandah behind the couple overlooks a lake, the view framed by colorful Japanese maple leaves, the wind blowing the beaded tassels of the lantern hung overhead. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro IX and Suketakaya Takasuke IV (Sawamura Sojuro VI). An interesting subject, attractively colored.
