Comments - Interesting scene from the play "Na ni Takashi Mariuta Jitsuroku" of a confrontation taking place between two commoners in a shop. The young man in the center grabs hold of his companion's sword, staring up at him with a stern frown. The fellow scowls back at him as he pulls up the hem of his blue kimono to tuck it up into his obi. A beauty watches them from the doorway, peering from between pretty peony patterned curtains shaded from gray to brown. Another woman eavesdrops from the room at right, grinning happily as she holds her sleeve to her chin. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with a red lacquer comb and a peony floral ornament. From right, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III as Kogoro's wife Osen, Segawa Otome (?) as the geisha Koyoshi, Bando Takesaburo I as Matsudaiya Kogoro (C), and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Matsudaiya Shirobei (L). An interesting subject with fine detail in the setting.
