Comments - Handsome illustration from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel forces under the leadership of Saigo Takamori gathering outside a castle in preparation for attacking. The general sits on horseback in the center, dressed in a splendid black military uniform and plumed hat, gesturing with his sword. The samurai listen soberly to his instructions, their spears upright, ready to go into battle. Smoke drift upwards from bonfires places around the area, as snow falls steadily. The white banners feature a slogan that was fabricated for the rebels by woodblock print artists, "A New Government, Rich in Virtue." The slogan was never actually used by Saigo and his men. Beautifully drawn and detailed, with fine bokashi shading in the smoke, sky, and ground. A rare quiet moment from this turbulent conflict.
