Ichikawa Ebizo V as Banzui Chobei and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Shirai Gonpachi, 1858

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait featuring Ichikawa Ebizo V as the famous otokodate Banzui Chobei and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Shirai Gonpachi, who is wanted for the murder of his uncle, in the play "Koharu no En Mitsugumi Sakazuki." After the pair meet at Suzu-ga-Mori and Gonpachi fights off a gang trying to capture him for the reward, Chobei hands him a letter from a messenger that has fallen on the ground. Gonpachi looks up from the message with a sober frown as he realizes it is a warrant for his arrest. Chobei holds a lantern up over him, grimacing unhappily, a plaid robe draped over his shoulder. Nice expressive figure with soft shading in the night sky.
