At the Battle of Hyogo between the Nitta and Ashikaga Clans, Nitta Yoshisada's Forces Set Out for the Front, 1863

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting Nitta Yoshisada's forces gathering at the shore before the Battle of Hyogo, ready to set out for the front. The general sits on a folding stool at right, wearing a splendid red and yellow brocade robe over his armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon. He holds a tasseled command baton in one hand, staring solemnly at the warriors before him, who seem posed and ready for action, carrying spears and banners. The sails of samurai warships are massed along the horizon in the distance, presenting a seemingly impenetrable force. Wonderful detail in the armor and weapons, and the expressive faces. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great samurai subject.
