Oume and Kumenosuke

Series; True Feelings Compared: The Founts of Love

Oume and Kumenosuke - Lovely design of the young couple Oume and Kumenosuke from a kabuki play about their tragic love. The beauty Oume lives at an inn at the foot of Mt. Kuya. Her lover Kumenosuke works as a servant at the temple atop the mountain. They run away together and commit suicide, rather than be separated. The pair is shown with their backs together, Oume looking sadly down. Kumenosuke looks stoically away, neither wanting to face the reality of their situation. A beautiful moving image of the tragic young lovers, with wonderful fine line work in the hair and soft colors.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Very faint crease across lower left. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
