A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Iris, 1845 - Handsome portrait of the actor Iwai Kumesaburo III as the murderer Shirai Gonpachi, looking up with a scowl from the message in his hand, which is the warrant for his arrest. The young man's hair is elaborately styled, pulled into a stylish topknot, and his eyes are fringed with delicate eyelashes. The portrait is presented as the reflection in a lacquer framed mirror draped with colorful fabric, with a large purple iris behind it. Beautifully colored, from a rarely seen series pairing kabuki actors with flowers and trees.
