Offerings of Silk

Comments - Terrific scene showing the Meiji Empress surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting. A low black lacquer table at left holds offerings of rolls of colorful silk and bolts of cloth piled in neat stacks, wrapped in white and tied with bows. At lower left, a beauty carries a black lacquer tray holding a carefully folded red kimono patterned with flowers. The Empress stands at left holding a folding fan, watching the other women smile and chat happily. The verandah overlooks a lovely view of a lake framed by blossoming cherry trees, and a screen features cranes and blossoms. Lovely color and detail in this attractive scene from court life.
