Shibaraku, 1864

Comments - Dramatic kabuki portrait of an actor in the lead role of the play "Shibaraku" (Wait a Minute!), a drama made popular by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. Here, the hero stares over his shoulder with an intense expression, gripping a fan in his hand, his sleeve raised above his head. He wears a voluminous rust colored outer robe over an intricately patterned kimono and a suit of armor, a black court cap tied beneath his chin with a blue cord. His bold stage makeup and flared sideburns are characteristic of this arragoto or brash role. A great design by a rarely seen artist.

Artist - Kunitoki (active circa 1860)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Losses at edges and wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and creasing. Please see photos for details.
