Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan

Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Ghost of Tamichi, 1880 - Incredible design of the ghost of the great warrior Tamichi appearing as an enormous snake to haunt his enemies. One of Emperor Nintoku's generals, Tamichi was killed by a poisoned arrow in a battle against the Ezo, a native people living in northern Japan. His ghost hovers above a grave mound covered with tall grass, pointing a finger accusingly at the Ezo as the great serpent coils around with glowing yellow and red eyes. The men are sent tumbling in all directions by the crushing weight of the snake as it begins to swallow one of their companions by the head, the victim struggling helpless. The red flames below the ghost indicate its supernatural origin. A fantastic composition with dramatic movement and wonderful detail. A terrific design from this series and a wonderful choice for a Yoshitoshi collector.
