Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Kiichi Hogen sanryaku no maki." At left, the young samurai Ushiwakamaru, the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune, brandishes his sword as he looks up at the elderly Heike warrior Kiichi Hogen, who sits on a red stool. Hogen grimaces back at him, his long gray hair falling over his shoulders, a feather fan in one hand and a scroll containing his secret military strategies in the other. The yakko or footman Kisanta watches with alarm at left, Princess Minaduru standing behind him. Pine trees against the evening sky provide an atmospheric setting for the figures. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Ebizo V, Bando Hikosaburo IV, and Onoe Kikujiro II. The first time we've offered this Kuniyoshi subject.
