Prince Genji and Fishermen

Comments - Beautiful scene of Prince Genji paying a visit to the shore, where many fishermen are catching ayu or sweetfish. He sits on a platform covered with a red floral carpet at right, one sandal kicked off and his leg tucked up beside him. He wears a deep blue coat patterned with paulownia and trimmed with a red pleated collar. A young boy stands behind him, offering the nobleman a cup of tea on an elegant lacquer tray. His sword bearer kneels before him, holding his weapon upright in one hand and a cloth-wrapped parcel in the other. She smiles over her shoulder as another beauty approaches carrying a red lacquer picnic box decorated with a pine tree and cranes, and a package draped with blue fabric. A lovely panoramic view of the water with fishermen going about their work, hauling in nets and casting lines, with low mountains along the distance shore, the scene framed by graceful willow trees. A charming subject, nicely detailed with delicate embossing in the white kimono trim and soft shading in the sky.
