Old Custom, Bustle of Spring, 1889

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting two men performing a comic dance for a group of women. At right, a princess hidden behind a fine reed blind giggles into her sleeve as she watches. At lower left, a beauty recoils from the dancer approaching her, alarmed by his behavior. In the background, young boys accompanied by an older man enjoy a performance of a monkey on a leash, dancing about under the trainer's direction. The palace overlooks a lovely garden pond with blossoming plum trees along the shore. Detailed with burnishing on the black caps and obi.
