Original Toyokuni II (1777 - 1835) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Wada Rebellion, circa 1825 - 1835

Comments - Lively scene from the thirteenth-century Wada Rebellion, with a warrior on a black horse at left galloping across the battlefield, wielding a huge iron club. At lower left, an enemy tumbles backwards onto a small bonfire, his legs flailing. At lower right, a samurai kneels atop a fallen foe as he raises his sword high while simultaneously twisting the arm of another enemy. Fighting continues among the pine trees behind them, with warriors on horseback and on foot. Wonderful detail in this action-packed design.
