Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauties Sewing, 1895

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting beauties sewing. The woman at left holds a ruler, a length of cloth spread out on a tray before her with a pair of scissors on the floor nearby. The beauty in the center kneels beside a sewing chest topped with a pincushion, smiling as she watches the young woman at right ironing a kimono with a pan filled with red hot coals. An image of cranes wading in shallow water decorates the wall panel behind her, while the room opens onto a view of a garden with stepping stones framed by a blossoming plum tree. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the hair and the black obi at left. A charming scene from everyday life.
