Original Kuniaki II (1835 - 1888) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan IV, 1861

Comments - Terrific okubi-e or large head portrait of Osaka kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV as a samurai. He makes a strange grimace as he looks up, his brows furrowed and his mouth slightly open, showing his even teeth. His long hair sticks out wildly around his head, with longer locks falling over his shoulder and shorter strands framing his face, emphasizing his expression. He wears a geometric print kimono with medallions surrounded by sacred jewels over a fine suit of armor, one hand resting atop his sleeve. A fantastic image, beautifully detailed with extremely fine line work in the hair and a rich background shaded from black to deep blue with handsome wood grain impression. Includes a dusting of mica along the top edge. This design is considered Kuniaki II's masterpiece and is rarely seen on the market.
