Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Musashibo Benkei and Beauty, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the warrior monk Musashibo Benkei frowning angrily at a young beauty. Under his arm he carries a cylindrical box used to hold the severed head of a samurai for identification. He wears a brown outer robe with a large Buddhist wheel on it over a green print kimono and red under robe, and a black court cap. The beauty tilts her head with a sly smile as she pulls up the collar of her blue kimono. Her long hair falls loosely over her shoulders, adorned with a red lacquer comb and large clusters of blue flowers. From left the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke and Kawarazaki Gonjuro. Nice large expressive figures with soft shading in the night sky.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with somewhat heavy paper. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details.
