Sawarabi, Chapter 48: Masaoka and Senmatsu - Poignant scene from a kabuki play based on the contested heir to the Date Clan. The loyal nursemaid Masaoka has been charged with keeping the young family heir, Tsuruchiyo, safe in the women's quarters. Her own son, Senmatsu, who serves as the heir's playmate, has also been trained to taste his food in case of poison. Here, the boy leans over a large box of sweets, happily eating, unaware that the treats have been poisoned in an attempt on the heir's life. Masaoka looks over her shoulder with a worried frown as she pulls up the collar of her outer robe. Nicely detailed and colored.
