Guard Restraining a Samurai, 1886 - Dramatic kabuki scene of a guard attempting to restrain a samurai wielding a sword above his head. The guard grabs him from behind, holding a truncheon against his throat. The samurai's intended victim tumbles backwards at lower left, flinging his hand out in self-defense. A beauty watches with alarm from the left, while at right a kamuso or wandering monk lifts his basket hat for a closer look, his shakuhachi flute in hand. The room opens onto onto a garden with a stone lantern and blossoming cherry tree overhead.
