Battle from the Taiheiki, 1856

Comments - Terrific battle scene from the epic Japanese story "The Taiheiki," which details the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in the 14th century. At left, Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa charges an enemy on horseback, each with his arms outstretched, having already lost his weapon during the fight. A samurai is trampled under the horse's hooves at left, and swords, spears, arrows, and personal standards litter the ground. At upper right, a warrior duels with an enemy, clashing spear against sword as he backs his opponent toward the edge of a rocky cliff overhanging the water. The fight continues on the shore below. A lively image with a striking natural setting.

Artist - Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 7/8" + margins as shown
