History of the Ups and Downs of the Minamoto and Taira: The battle of Katsu-ura in Awa Province, 1839 -1841 - Incredible depiction of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his troops marching along the water's edge to attack Yoshito's castle on March 20, 1185, resulting in the Battle of Katsu-ura in Awa Province. The daimyo rides a dappled horse at left, the fringe of a tall banner fluttering in the breeze above his back. The warriors rush forward carrying a variety of pole arms, including spears, a hatchet, and several kinds of rakes. At right, a monk with his head swathed in a gray cowl shoulders a heavy iron club as the samurai march along the shore, following the troops ahead rounding the beach and crossing over a bridge. The castle can be seen at far upper right, perched along the mountainside. A great design with wonderfully detailed, expressive figures, and a handsome natural setting.
