Warrior on Horseback, 1867 - Handsome scene of a warrior on horseback outside a castle from "The Taiheiki," a chronicle of the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in 14th century Japan. He scowls angrily as he looks ahead, wearing a red vest with his family crest on it over a suit of armor, the same symbol on the personal standard above his back. Beyond the moat, the castle walls enclose a complex of buildings among the trees, with the tops of colorful banners and standards visible. Nicely detailed.
