Series; A Short Illustrated History of Japan

Emperor Takakura, 1880 - Fantastic triptych from Yoshitoshi's series of ten prints depicting famous stories and events from the history of Japan. The scene is presented as part of a scroll unrolling from right to left. Here, the great warrior Taira no Shigemori pays a visit to his father, Kiyomori, in an attempt to prevent him from imprisoning Emperor Takakura. The ruthless Kiyomori had arranged a marriage between the Emperor and his daughter, and he sought to place the couple's first son on the throne to ensure his own power. The elderly Kiyomori huddles under a red robe at left, his prayer beads tossed on the floor before him, as Shigemori sits calmly in a blue robe at right, clasping his hands together. He is surrounded by Taira retainers dressed in armor and wearing court caps. Beautifully drawn with realistic, expressive figures and fine detail in the elegant setting. A great subject from this interesting series.
