Taira no Kiyomori Gesturing to the Sun to Stand Still, 1842 - 1843

Comments - Great image of the ruthless general Taira no Kiyomori standing on a verandah, gesturing imperiously to the sun with his fan. He decided that a temple he was having built at Miyajima should be completed before the day's end; when that appeared unlikely, he ordered the sun to stand still until the building project was finished. He strikes a bold pose on the deck of a fine palace overlooking the water, a sword bearer and his retainers kneeling behind him. Two noblemen at lower right scowl at his actions. The sun has already begun to set, a rosy glow spreading across the horizon, as his retainers watch the warrior in fascination. A terrific scene from this classic samurai tale.
