Fighting over a Banner, 1855

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Konoshita Kage Masago no Datezome" of three people struggling over a banner. At left, Mashiba Hisayoshi, the kabuki counterpart for the real-life Hashiba Hideyoshi, holds one end of the scroll up in his left hand, scowling angrily. At right, a warrior in a dragon kimono glares back at him, stretching the fabric over his shoulder. Above, a woman warrior clenches the end of the cloth between her teeth, a sword in hand. A circular inset at upper left shows a young boy painting on a folding fan. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo IV as Mashiba Hisayoshi, Nakamura Fukusuke I as Sutewakamaru (in inset), Seki Sanjuro III as Onishi Yukinaga, and Onoe Kikugoro IV as Mitsuhide's daughter Kikyo. A handsome design of large bold figures, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
