Scene from the 47 Ronin, Act 3: The Quarrel at the Palace, 1857

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the tale of the 47 ronin. In Act 3, Lord Enya Hangan can take no more of Lord Kono Moronao's abuse and attack him, leading him to draw his sword, an act punishable by death. At left, Hangan lunges toward Moronao, grabbing hold of his wrist as Moronao recoils with a horrified expression, thrusting out his fan in self-defense. The back of the room is decorated with a large pine tree, and a reed blind is rolled up above. A great image.

Image Size - 14" x 18 3/4"
