Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Moon, 1852

Series; Moon, Snow, and Flowers

Moon, 1852 - Terrific full-length portrait of the young Prince Genji standing inside a palace, with a view of the full moon framed by graceful willow branches. He smiles happily, holding out his fan as the shy beauty at left hands him a bouquet of morning glories. He wears a purple and white checked kimono with a leafy pattern, the white areas delicately embossed. A pipe and small portable brazier rest on the floor beside a softly glowing lamp on a stand. Other women watch the exchange from behind fine reed panels at eight side of the room. A charming image with lovely color and fine detail in the simulated wood of the sliding screens. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
