Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Ebizo V as Kumagai Rensei, 1850

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo V as the samurai Kumagai Rensei, grimacing angrily as he clutches a fan between his hands. He wears a voluminous black vest over a red and orange print kimono tucked into black pants, the long legs trailing on the floor beside him, and a black court cap. An elegant cloth panel at upper left provides privacy. Oddly, a pair of tweezers stands upright at lower left, but this character does not appear in the play commonly known as "Kenuki" (Tweezers) so we are not sure of its significance. An interesting design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight thinning at corners, a few small holes, repaired. Slight toning, creasing, and soiling. Please see photos for details.
