The Fifth Month, 1856 - Lovely triptych of Prince Genji and a group of upper-class beauties enjoying a spring day from a verandah built over a pond. On the shore below, a woman in an elegant kimono tosses food to several large koi fish, which eagerly rise to the surface to nibble at the food. Colorful irises line the pool of gently rippling water. The young nobleman reclines against an ornate armrest, a pipe in hand. A woman leans against the railing, watching the fish below, wearing a gorgeous kimono patterned with morning glories and softly shaded from dark rose to pale green. A beautiful scene from this classic tale with excellent detail. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
