Comments - Charming scene from the "Wakana" chapter of the famous "Tale of Genji," which takes place at Genji's Rokujo mansion. At left, Genji's wife, the Third Princess, looks out through a reed blind onto the lovely garden. The beauty was supposed to stay hidden in her private quarters, but at one point she follows her curious kitten outside. The young nobleman Kashiwagi, who was playing a game of football with his companion, spied the princess, seeing her just long enough to fall madly in love with her. He looks up with a smile, shielding his eyes with his sleeve as he watches the princess through the blind, holding the football with his other hand. At right, a matron and a young beauty watch the couple with interest from behind a blossoming sherry tree. Wonderful embossed detail in the cat's fur and the white kimono trim, and beautiful shading in the water and sky. A lovely triptych. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
