Ichikawa Ebizo as Banzui Chobei, 1838

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo as the famous otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei crouching in an interior. He frowns angrily as he adjusts a white cloth draped over his shoulder, a large knife in his other hand. Signs hang on the wall at upper left, with a straw-wrapped cask of sake and a wooden pail on the floor below. A nicely expressive figure in a handsomely detailed setting.
