Comments - Intriguing image of Nakamura Fukusuke I as a puppet of the greengrocer (yaoya) Hanbei in a style of acting known as ningyoburi, which imitates the exaggerated movements of bunraku puppets. Two puppeteers dressed in black with veils over their faces move the actor, giving the appearance of manipulating the performer. Hanbei looks up with a rapt expression as he holds one sleeve to his chest. Buildings line the street behind him that leads to an arched bridge. From left, the puppeteers are Nakamura Kangoro I as Yoshida Kanta and Arashi Kangoro I as Yoshida Kango. An interesting design.
