Ichikawa Danjuro IX as a Warrior in Battle, 1892

Comments - Dramatic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as a warrior in the midst of battle, caught in a hail of arrows. He draws his sword back above his head with one hand, slicing through an arrow in midair, grimacing angrily. He clutches a few arrows in his other hand, wearing a fine suit of armor over a yellow kimono with a purple floral pattern. A white sash is tied around his long hair, the ends fluttering in the wind behind him. A mountain appears in silhouette against the dark night sky at upper left. A fantastic design with the large, colorful figure dominating the composition. The first time we've seen this Kunichika design.
