Night Attack of the Soga Brothers

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The young brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. Dressed in yellow and blue kimono, the brothers battle with two armored warriors at the encampment. At left, Soga Juro grips his sword above his head with both hands, smoldering with anger, ready to strike. His opponent grips a spear with both hands, preparing to ward off the blow. Soga Goro grimaces at right, his long hair flowing wildly over his shoulders. Campfires burn in the background, sending clouds of orange smoke up into the gray night sky with Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. A fantastic image of this legendary battle with wonderfully expressive figures, beautifully colored. Nicely detailed with touches of burnishing on the armor.
