Beauty and Rakish Samurai, 1881

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a beauty meeting with a samurai during a late-night stroll. She smile at him as she pauses beside a red lacquer fence. He looks back at her with a defiant frown, tilting his chin upwards, his hair sticking out at the sides of his head, tied back rakishly with a purple sash. He holds a purple robe over one shoulder and a fan in the other hand. His servant crouches anxiously before him, one hand thrown out in alarm, his master's swords resting against his shoulder. A blossoming cherry tree frames the night sky, and two butterflies flutter overhead at right. A handsome design with large bold figures, vibrant coloring, and nice detail, with embossing on the white kimono collar and burnishing in the servant's black robe.
