Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Hanagatami Gojusan Tsugi, 1860

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Hanagatami Gojusan Tsugi" of the two arch enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon encountering each other in the Yoshiwara at night, the beauty Omon caught between the pair. Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Banzaemon, who appears at right dressed in a black robe with a bold design of swirling clouds and red lightning bolts. He stares angrily at his enemy, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Sanza eyes him suspiciously from left, wearing a kimono patterned with swallows in flight and driving raindrops. The wife of Takinoya, Omon smiles back at Sanza, unaware of the feud between the men. The upper stories of the teahouses behind them extend into the distance, framed by a cherry tree covered with delicate pink and white blossoms. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ichizo III, Ichikawa Shinsha I, and Nakamura Fukusuke I. A terrific image from this famous tale, nicely detailed with light embossing on the cherry blossoms and the hilt of Banzaemon's sword.
