Courtesans Writing New Year's Greetings

Series; New Beauties of the Yoshiwara in the Mirror of their Own Script

Courtesans Writing New Year's Greetings - Handsome diptych of two Yoshiwara courtesans in their private quarters. The standing beauty at left writes a New Year's greeting on a poem slip as her attendant holds a tray with ink. Her elegant kimono features scenes from the Tale of Genji. The other beauty is engrossed in reading a letter. A charming scene with the verses above reproducing the women's handwriting. Elegant detail and color in this intimate view of life in the Yoshiwara.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
