Scene from the Shank's Mare Tokaido, 1854 - Amusing kabuki scene featuring Yajirobei and Kitahachi, the bumbling heroes of the novel "Shank's Mare Tokaido," which chronicles their comic misadventures traveling by foot along the Tokaido Road. Here, the pair are shown at an inn, with Kita balancing a shelf laden with parcels while Yaji tries to get him to step back so as not to fall on a stone statue of a Buddhist deity. The sculpture lies on the floor as if sleeping, wrapped in a straw mat and covered with a plaid quilt. The actors are Nakayama Echizo I as Yajirobei and Nakamura Tsuruzu I as Kitahachi. Nice expressive figures in this humorous subject.
