Matron and Lost Son; Shirabyoshi Dancer, 1892

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych featuring two scenes. At left, the matron Shigenoi looks over her shoulder with a slightly anxious expression as she carries an elegant black lacquer container filled with sweets. She has just realized that the young pack horse driver Sankichi, who kneels beside her, is actually the son that she was forced to give up at birth. Unfortunately, because of her high position taking care of the Princess Shirabe, she can never be a mother to him, and so she must keep her secret. The boy looks up at her with a slight smile, wearing a green plaid kimono over a blue tie-dyed shirt. At right, a shirabyoshi dancer pauses to look soberly at the samurai at right. A green and blue patterned temple bell hangs above, with the panels along the back of the room decorated with a large pine tree. Nice large expressive figures, detailed with burnishing the matron's black kimono and the black lacquer trim of the screen at far left.
