Sukeroku and Rival Ikyu, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the tale of the street knight Sukeroku. The otokodate is in love with the beautiful courtesan Agemaki, but the elderly samurai Ikyu rivals him for her affection. In the center, Sukeroku grimaces angrily as he sits on a bench covered with a red cloth, one sandal kicked off and his leg tucked up before him. At right, the white-haired Ikyu stares at him with an alarmed expression. At left, Agemaki smiles as she watches the pair, seemingly unaware of the conflict between them. Her blue gray kimono is patterned with the "takaramono" or "precious things," worn over a red under robe tied with a black obi featuring oversized peony blossoms. Just to the right, the white sake seller grins at the men over his shoulder. An attractive design with expressive figures, nicely detailed with embossing on Ikyu's white hair and beard.
