The Subscription List, 1843 - 1846

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting the play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attempting to flee cross the border disguised as monks to evade Yoshitsune's brother, Yoshitomo. The aristocrat Togashi, shown at right in a blue kimono patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. Togashi suspects that the young monk kneeling at left is Yoshitsune (and actually is). In the center panel, the Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Benkei waves his walking staff angrily as he pretends to berate Yoshitsune, something he would never do if the monk was actually his lord. Benkei wears a voluminous striped coat and huge white pants detailed with narrow stripes. At upper left, one of Togashi's retainers scowls as he watches the men, wearing a yellow kimono with a spider web pattern tucked into green print pants. Pine trees in the background suggest the country setting. The first time we've offered this Kuniyoshi design.
