Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Sixth Month, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming scene from the story "The False Murasaki and the Country Genji," a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji. The young man waits at left beside the mosquito netting hung around a bed, smiling happily, a fan in one hand. He watches as his sweetheart Katsuragi emerges from under the netting, delighted to find a love letter from him on the floor. A samurai kneeling beside her gestures toward the message, which has arrived in a black lacquer container, while an attendant carries in a lamp at right. Mitsuuji wears a beautiful kamishimo shaded in soft tones and patterned with curving grasses, delicate leaves, and tiny white blossoms. A woman kneels at his side, giggling into her kimono sleeve, her black obi burnished with a geometric pattern. A lovely subject with wonderful detail and attractive color.
