The Eighteen Kabuki Plays - Terrific image from Torii Kiyotada's great series "The Eighteen Kabuki Plays" (Kabuki juhachiban) dating to 1916. This handsome series depicts characters from the eighteen kabuki plays made famous by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. These attractive designs feature expressive portraits framed by the three nested rice measures crest of the line. A rarely seen, early shin-hanga actor series, and a fine choice for a collector interested in classic kabuki subjects.

Special detail - Delicate cloth embossing on the white inset at left and raised flower and bats in the lavender text panel at right.
