Comments - Terrific panoramic view commemorating the journey of the shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the emperor. The shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event, resulting in many woodblock prints recording the journey. Here, the procession makes its way along the Tokaido Road through the Hakone mountains, with identically dressed samurai walking in neat rows. At upper right, the shogun's covered palanquin can be seen, sheltered with a red umbrella. The shore is lined with many stone statues of Buddhist deities, with a torii gate leading to a shrine at right. On a lower level before the gate, men are gathered to show their respects, bowing as the group passes. A fantastic image of this historic event, wonderfully detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
