Sawamura Tossho II as Mitsushima Samon, 1867

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho II as Mitsushima Samon in the play "Mure Kiyotaki Hiiki no Seiriki." He holds a drawstring purse above his head, looking up with a malevolent sneer, his brows furrowed. The sleeve of his blue and black checked kimono is torn, clenched in a hand that rises up into the page at lower left. He has the two swords of a samurai, but his head is unshaven on top, suggesting that he may be a ronin. An interesting, expressive figure, set against a background shaded from gray to white to green.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A couple small holes at side, repaired. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details.
