A Scene at the Shinagawa-ya in Fukagawa, 1868

Comments - Lovely scene of courtesans at the Shinagawa-ya in Fukagawa practicing ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging. At bottom left, a beauty places daffodils in an ornate vase. A very young girl stands behind her holding a pitcher of water. In the center, a kneeling woman uses a scissors to trim the base of a flowering branch. She wears a blue outer kimono with a striking design of a large anchor and rope, and smaller seashells and birds. The room opens onto a courtyard garden with a large pine tree. Beautifully detailed with vibrant color. A handsome design.
