Filial Devotion

Series; Eight Honorable Ways of Conduct, 1878

Filial Devotion - Great portrait of the young Hino Kumawakamaru preparing to avenge his father's death. His father Hino Suketome served as advisor to Emperor Go-Daigo. Suspected of a conspiracy against the emperor, Suketome was exiled to the island of Sado and sentenced to execution to be carried out by the lay monk Homma Saburo, who presided over the island. Kumawakamaru made his way to the island and was granted an audience with the monk, but Homma refused to let him see his father before the beheading. Pretending illness, Kumawakamaru stayed at Homma's residence and secretly plotted against him. Once night he snuck into Homma's room and stabbed him to death, escaping by swinging across the moat on a bamboo cane. Here, he peers cautiously around the edge of a screen, gripping a dirk in his hand as he awaits the moment to strike an achieve vengeance for his father. Interestingly, Yoshitoshi has chosen to depict the moments just before the attack in a restrained image that points out the youthfulness of the boy. A handsome design from this rarely seen series.
