Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Shiranui Monogatari" of three young fellows in the woods, watching as a trio of agitated men runs towards them. At top center, the samurai Aoyagi Harunosuke grins as he holds the blade of his sword between his hands, his sleeves tied back with a white sash. Below him, Yukioka Fuyujiro scowls as he grips his weapon with both hands. At lower right, Kagesawa Natsunojo reacts with alarm while above him, Otomo Keibu Soren emerges from the foliage holding a spear against his shoulder. From right, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo IV, Ichikawa Dannosuke V, Bando Shuka I, Bando Takesaburo I, Ichikawa Hirogoro I as Utsubo Yakuro, and unidentified actors as Kotetsu Tachizo and the servant Gansuke. Nice large expressive figures, beautifully detailed with a burnished floral pattern on Harunosuke's black kimono, and a burnished geometric pattern on Soren's black robe.
