Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Shinsen Taikoki)

Burning Incense at Daitoku-ji, 1883 - Intriguing depiction of Oda Nobunaga's memorial service at Daitoku Temple in Murasakino. Nobunaga's loyal retainer, Hideyoshi, stands at right with Nobunaga's young grandson, Prince Samboshi, perched on a stepped platform beside him. Hideyoshi supported Prince Samboshi as Nobunaga's successor, with himself as the guardian, a move disputed by Nobunaga's two living sons. At left, a nobleman in an olive green robe reacts angrily, enraged by Hideyoshi's suggestion. Hideyoshi appears startled by the response, his eyes wide and mouth turned down in a frown. He wears a beautiful black court robe with a subtle burnished pattern of paulownia leaves, and a black court cap. A retainer kneeling beside him is ready to spring to his defense, and even Prince Samboshi reaches for his sword. Wonderful detail in the drapery and objects displayed on altar behind the expressive figures. A fascinating subject.
