Actors under Blossoming Plum Trees, 1855

Comments - Terrific six-panel kabuki print depicting actors beneath blossoming plum trees. The beauty in the second panel from the left holds an origami crane, while the man just to the right of her hunches over with a worried grimace, holding a scroll tied with a bow in his outstretched hand and carrying a robe under his arm. The fellow in the fourth panel from the left carries a branch decorated with Daikoku's magic mallet, a money bag, and a miniature bale of rice, lucky emblems for the New Year. The beauty in the fifth panel from the left wears a dark blue obi with a beautiful burnished pattern. The man in the sixth panel from left carries a fish and an eel dangling from slender bamboo poles. Plum trees covered with white blossoms and buds create a lovely backdrop for the figures against a coral colored sky. A handsome and rare six-panel design with beautiful color, nice detail, and fine bokashi shading.
